Cinema Activities & Events
Cinema-related activities unspool year-round at Virginia Tech. Here's a sampling...
Visiting Artists & Special Screenings
Filmmakers that have recently screened on campus or visited cinema classes include David Sutherland (The Farmer's Wife, Country Boys), Joe Swanberg (Hannah Takes the Stairs), Byron Hurt (Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes), and Daniel Karslake (For the Bible Tells Me So), among others.
Screenings at Virginia Tech include annual French & Francophone and Jewish cinema festivals, as well as many screening series organized by various academic departments and student organizations.
Student Organizations
Virginia Tech is also home to the student-run Progeny Film Festival, as well as the Association of Movie Productions (AMP) Film Club, which brings together students that are passionate about making movies.
Moviegoing: Blacksburg and Beyond
Off campus, students are able to catch movies on the big screen. Just steps away from Virginia Tech’s campus is The Lyric, Blacksburg’s own restored 1930s movie palace. Nearby movie theaters in Christiansburg will satisfy those looking for the latest Hollywood blockbusters, and students seeking cutting edge fare often go visit Roanoke’s four-screen arthouse, The Grandin.
Professional Opportunities
Virginia Tech cinema students have earned internships at Disney, Sony, Sundance Institute, and the Virginia Film Office, among other well-regarded companies and organizations.
Closer to home, students have worked on projects by VT faculty members and led documentary groups as part of Blacksburg Stories, a summer youth video project co-sponsored by the Dept. of Communication and The Lyric Theatre.
